Monday August 23rd, Mackinac Island

Hello from Michigan.

Mackinac Island is a little tourist town that you get to by ferry ride, 16 minutes, from Mackinac City, somewhere near the top end of Michigan. The hot topics of MI is that there is fudge, and there are horses.

They outlawed cars somewhere in the 1800's and since then you hve to skirt around horses and bikes. Once you get on the island, you can hire a bike or hire a tax, which is a horse drawn carriage. For further fun, try hiring a drive it yourself buggy or a trail ride.

The fudge shops.. well there would be 1 fudge shop to every 4 other shops, and they have big marble tables at the window so you can see them make it. For lunch I had all you can eat pizza, served by Eastern Euro women/students. ??? When you order lemonade here you get real lemonade, not Sprite. We had corn chips and guacamole later for a snack.

I did get some fudge. I also got a t shirt that says: Absolutely Out of Vodka (with Absolut bottle) - Life is Crappy.

Patted some curious horses. Walked down a hill using some timber steps through a woody area - very sweet. Avoided plenty of horse poo. Looked at historic houses. I dismayed my hosts by trying a very bitter bright red berry. Hey, I had hoped they were red currants but nope... but it wasn't deadly nightshade either. Anyway, I'm still here typing to you all, so I survived.

I couldn't believe so many fudge shops. All different brands, fighting for recognition.

In the evening visited with an all American family who had an American Staffy pup, 4 bikes. A huge bush land all around them. We ate Bratwurst, hot dog buns, cucumber salad and pulled pork. I was given a berry flavoured beer. A great place to do their trail biking for sure.
